Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening with Zoom whitening light

Teeth whitening is very popular, extremely simple and achieves excellent results in minimal time. Whether you’ve been thinking about it for a while, your wedding day is approaching, a school reunion or a big event is coming up or maybe you just need a cosmetic pick-me-up, call Mt Barker Dentists today. We’ll be happy to assess your teeth and offer the perfect solution so you can enjoy your new white smile soon. We advise patients to have a dental assessment before commencing teeth whitening so that we can ensure your teeth and gums are suitable to undergo your treatment. At this assessment we’ll discuss dietary changes needed for the two days following bleaching, like drinking no coffee or red wine and not smoking.

What will Mt Barker Dentists check?

  • Existing tooth decay
  • Symptoms of sensitivity
  • Signs of gum recession
  • Presence of inflammed or bleeding gums
  • Existing tooth restorations on your front teeth (fillings, veneers, crowns or bridges)
  • Any other oral irritations or possible conditions

If your gums are inflammed you may need improved oral hygiene along with a thorough scale to heal the gums so they are firm against your teeth. This will stop the fluid that exudes from inflammed gums from lifting the protective gum barrier, preventing painful gum sensitivity from the whitening solutions.

Once a whitening treatment is discussed and agreed on we take impressions to make the stents for your take home kit that you’ll receive following your whitening appointment. There are two teeth whitening options to choose from:

In-chair Zoom Whitening

We will first polish your teeth to optimise the results before applying 2 to 3 layers of our concentrated whitening solutions. We recommend a take-home kit to complement the initial whitening session. This procedure takes approximately one hour.

Ultimate Whitening Kit (take home)

The Ultimate Whitening Kit is the best way to maintain your white smile. We create custom trays that tailor-fit your teeth and provide the whitening material. For the first treatment, we will clean and polish your teeth to ensure optimal whitening. Then at home you simply dispense a small amount of the whitening material into your trays and leave in for the recommended time, generally 15 to 30 minutes. Your supply of whitening material will last between 6 and 12 months depending on how often you use it.

You are in full control of how white you want your teeth to be. If you want whiter teeth, increase your frequency of use. If you want gentle touch ups, whiten less frequently. We will discuss the whitening frequency during your appointment and the frequency needed to whiten your teeth to retain the shade you desire.

How long does it last?

The main factors determining the success of your teeth whitening are diet, age and the existing condition of your teeth. Regular check-ups and professional teeth cleaning will optimise your long-term results. To extend the whitening effects we recommend that you coincide your whitening regime at home with when you have your dental teeth cleaning at Mt Barker Dentists.

Will my teeth be sensitive?

For some patients, tooth whitening can increase sensitivity. Generally it is mild and will resolve once the whitening is completed. If your teeth are sensitive, we recommend using a special desensitising tooth paste during and after whitening to help reduce discomfort.

Will it soften my enamel?

No, tooth whitening does not soften your enamel. It temporarily dehydrates your tooth while the whitening is taking place and is completely reversed once complete. This is why your teeth may become sensitive. Tooth whitening does not increase your chances of decay or wear out tooth enamel.
